Jack J. Merchlinsky, Jr.
John J. “ Jack” Merchlinsky, 54 of Gilberton, died unexpectedly Monday as a result of a vehicle accident on Route 309, Lehigh County. Born in Shenandoah, August 1, 1960, he was a son of John J., Sr. and Dorothy Kostingo Merchlinsky, Gilberton. He was a graduate of Mahanoy Area High School, Class of 1978. Jack was a member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Gilberton, and assisted with the maintenance of the church properties as well as the parish cemetery. He was a Plant Manager and heavy equipment operator for Schuylkill Energy, Yatesville. He also worked as a mechanic for Nestle, Allentown for 11 years; and previously worked as a heavy equipment operator for Mt. Carmel and Tuscarora coal companies. Jack was an avid Notre Dame fan and would take an annual drive out to South Bend, Indiana, to the University of Notre Dame to watch a football game. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Anna Kostingo, in 2012. Jack is survived by his wife Paula Hashin Merchlinsky, with whom he would have celebrate 31 years of marriage on March 17. He is also survived by the pride and joy of his life, his three daughters; Nicole Merchlinsky, at home; Ashley and her husband Mark Fowler, Emmaus and Kayla Merchlinsky, at home; a granddaughter; Lilianna; a brother: Greg and wife, Suzanne Merchlinsky, New Boston; sisters, Michelle and husband David Sluck, Mahanoy Plane, and Cindy Farlow, FL; nieces and nephews. Religious Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Maizeville, with Rev. Roman Pitula, pastor, as celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., with Parastas at 7 p.m. and from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Saturday morning at the Albert L. Gricoski Funeral Home, Frackville. Interment will be in St. John’s Parish Cemetery, Englewood/Frackville. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Lilianna Merchlinsky Scholarship Fund, 1-7 E. Centre St.; Mahanoy City, PA 17948 .
