Julia Semanchik

Julia Semanchik, 86, of Frackville, died Tuesday at the Schuylkill Center, Pottsville.  Born in Maizeville, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Magdalene (Shusko) Dura.  Julia was a 1948 graduate of Frackville High School.

Julia, best known as Julie by family and friends, was very passionate about her Ukrainian heritage.  As a proud member of St. John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Gilberton, she devoted her life to passing down her ancestors’ traditions, values, and language.  She sang in the Deanery Choir and made sure to rarely miss Sunday Mass or holidays.  She was employed by Pennsylvania National/M&T Bank.  She used these skills to help her church by keeping the finances of its summer picnics in order.

Julie had five children and supported her kids through many activities including being a Cub Scout Den Mother for Troop 89.  As her children got older, Julie made it her goal to keep family together through homecooked meals that included her famous meatballs, pyrohy, and halupkies.

She also loved to stay involved in all 14 of her grandchildren’s lives regardless of distance.  Sending cards, phone calls, visits, and furthering their education were very important to her.

Julie was an avid gardener with a green thumb and took pride in the appearance of her yard.  Julie had a love for nature and a compassion for people that was unmatched.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, John, in 2007, brothers, Paul and Michael, sister Anne Damiter, and daughter-in-law Janet.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol & Bernard Adukaitis, Frackville; and sons, John III & Betsy, Pittsburgh; Paul & Ann Marie, Shenandoah Heights; Mark & Patty, Frackville; and Michael, Vienna, VA.  Also surviving are 10 grandsons, 4 granddaughters, and 2 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Divine Liturgy with Burial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Gilberton, with Rev. Petro Zvarych, pastor, as celebrant.  Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Albert L. Gricoski Funeral Home, Frackville.  Parastas will be at 7:00 p.m. Visitation again at the funeral home from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday Morning with Panaheda at 9:00 a.m.  Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Julia’s name to St. John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church Memorial Fund, 243 S. Middle St. Frackville PA, 17931.
