John J. Smarr, 70, of Frackville passed away Monday evening at his home surrounded by his family

Born in Shenandoah, July 7, 1945 he was a son of the late Gus and Margaret Wirtz Smarr; he was a graduate of Mahanoy Area High School, class of 1963.

He was a US Navy veteran having served on the USS Forrestal during the Vietnam War.

John worked for the Reading Railroad, Conrail and Norfolk Southern Railroad in the Carpentry Department for 25 years before his retirement.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, Frackville.

John was a kind and gentle man; his favorite hobbies were taking care of his cars, his plants and garden, reading books, going to the movies and working on his carpentry projects.

 In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant son John Christopher Smarr.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Pengrin Smarr, to whom he is married 32 years; two daughters Chelsea Smarr, Frackville and Rebecca Lacey, Seattle, Wash.; a sister Peggy Lukash, Phoenix, AZ; a brother, Tom Smarr, Shamokin; nieces and nephews; close friends and relatives.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning in Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, Frackville, with Rev. Robert Finlan, pastor as celebrant.  Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 8:30 a.m. till time of Mass at the church.  Interment with Military Honors will be in St. John’s Ukrainian Parish Cemetery, Englewood/Frackville.

Donations can be made in Johns name to St. Joseph’s Parish Memorial Fund, 7 S. Broad Mountain Ave., Frackville, PA  17931 and/or the Ruth Steinart Memorial SPCA, 214 Airport Rd., Minersville, PA  17954.
