Adele M. Matern of Frackville passed away peacefully at home Wednesday morning with her family by her side.
Born in Frackville she was a daughter of the late Elias and Elizabeth Haddad Nahas.
 
She graduated from the former Frackville High School and attended the Tombrock College and Seton Hall College in Paterson, NJ.

Adele was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Frackville.
She was a teacher at St. Mary’s Elementary School in Paterson, NJ and upon returning to Frackville she taught at the former St. Joseph’s Elementary School. She retired from teaching and was a manager of the former Old River Road Bakery, Schuylkill Mall, Frackville.

Adele was active and volunteered in many community and church affairs. She was elected to Frackville Borough Council, was past President and served for 18 years.

Family was everything to Adele, she enjoyed cooking, had a great sense of humor and was happiest as she helped raise her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Carol A Matern Andrews, March 17, 2011; two sisters; Dorothy Rader and Sarah Welikonich; a brother, James Nahas.

Adele is survived by her husband Charles J. Matern, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, Sept. 5, 2013; a daughter Maureen McNelis and husband Thomas, Ringtown; two sons; Charles Matern, Frackville and Todd Matern and his wife Eileen, Ashland; daughter-in-law Barbara Matern, Frackville; Grandchildren; Jessie Matern, Joshua Matern, Jacquelyn Conapinski, John Matern, Allie Andrews, T.J. Matern and Molly McNelis; Great Grandchildren; Paige Matern, Kolton and Kirsten Conapinski; a brother Robert Nahas, New York City, NY; four sisters; Marie Hayek, Frackville, Rose Matthews, Easton, Joan Griffin, Morristown, NJ; Helene Nahas, Frackville and sister-in-law Bernadette Nahas, Frackville. Many loving nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews and her faithful companion Gizmo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Monday morning at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Frackville with Rev. Robert Finlan, pastor, as celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 6 – 9 pm Sunday evening at the Church and again from 9 – 10 am Monday morning before Mass. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s parish cemetery, Englewood/Frackville.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Adele’s name to Melanoma International Foundation, 250 Mapleflower Road, Glenmoore, PA 19343.
